Maya Collection is founded by women, for women. Here is the story behind why that matters, and how our Soft Jersey Black scarf ended up featured in InStyle Greece magazine.
We have seen brands that market themselves as "by women, for women" without women leading or being involved in decision-making, only showcasing women when it's time to market the product. This creates a false narrative that is sold to women, while men in decision-making roles continue to profit from it.
So many products are made for women, but not by women. How are we supposed to wear and use things that don't include women's perspectives? Creams, razors, stockings, underwear, pads, jeans, the list goes on. Designed for women, but by men.
We believe that a focus group alone isn't enough. Testing your product on 30–100 women and then moving on means the female perspective is lost in the process. Women's perspectives should be involved from start to finish when it comes to things women use every day.
Maya Collection is founded by women, for women. As sisters and founders, we've been involved in every detail from day one. The idea was born from the need to solve the problem of suffocating scarves.
You would think that in the 2020s, companies would have already solved this issue, creating scarves that don't itch or overheat, that stay in place, remain after washing, and are still soft and aesthetically beautiful. Unfortunately, low-quality scarves become a roadblock that almost every hijabi experiences. The problem is clear, we've felt it ourselves and have chosen to be part of the solution.
With one of us having a background in environmental studies and the other in economics with a focus on marketing, we've combined our passions for sustainability, aesthetics, and business to create something meaningful. This foundation allows us to be intentional about everything, from the materials we choose to how we communicate and grow our community.
